Facebook photos result in arrest
June 22, 2011
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators arrested a Tampa man June 17 after receiving a complaint about photos that had been posted on Facebook.
The complaint said that a deer and alligator had been freshly killed and that the suspected hunter, Kyle Edwards, 21, was also in the photos.
The animals allegedly were killed near Bronson in Levy County on private property north of Otter Creek.
FWC Investigator James Smith interviewed Edwards, who stated that on June 10, he and a friend went to the property in Otter Creek to camp and shoot a new AK-47 he had recently purchased at a Tampa gun show.
The two men saw an alligator on the dirt road leading to the camp, and Edwards shot and killed it. He explained they cleaned it, ate some of the meat and later gave the rest of the alligator meat to friends. The carcass was disposed of on a dump pile near the camp.
The next day, Edwards said, he shot and killed the deer. After taking a photograph of the animal, they repeated the process by cleaning the deer, eating some of the meat and giving the rest to friends. That carcass also ended up in the dump pile.
Edwards admitted to posting the photographs on his Facebook page and later removing the photos. He gave Smith a written statement about the incidents.
FWC investigators were able to locate and document the two animal carcasses as evidence in the case.
Edwards was issued a citation for taking deer during the closed season and for the illegal taking of an American alligator, both second-degree misdemeanors.

FWC extends alligator-hunting hours
June 9, 2011
At its meeting in St. Augustine Wednesday, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) adopted a rule change that provides approximately four additional hours of daylight hunting to the state’s recreational alligator hunting season. The change will be in effect for this year’s season: Aug. 15 – Nov. 1.
In addition to providing the extended hours, the change establishes the legal hours from 5 p.m. until 10 a.m. during the annual 11-week season.
In developing the recommendation to add four hours of daylight hunting, FWC staff weighed biological considerations, people’s desire for additional daylight opportunities to hunt alligators, the concerns expressed about potential conflicts between alligator hunters and other users of lakes and rivers, and the unique and diverse views citizens have about alligators and their management in Florida.

A Warning To Outdoor Users About Echinococcus, From Worms
December 14, 2009
This is a warning to outdoor users about a potentially deadly biological event that could result from one’s curiosity to poke at and kick through scat from wolves, coyotes and foxes. Of course not everyone knowingly does this but many hunters, trappers and simply the curious, want to know what these animals have been eating.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers have determined a Santa Rosa County farmer was justified in shooting a large male bear while it was killing his goats.
Holley resident Jerry Lee Cash, 60, shot the 370-pound bear at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday inside a fenced enclosure at his farm on 3319 Bob Tolbert Rd. The bear killed two goats and was chasing others. FWC biologists already had been to Cash’s home twice in the past week after the bear killed five other goats. Read more
Florida Legislators Raid CCW Trust Fund – Try to Intimidate Governor
May 13, 2009
In a last minute sneak attack on gun owners, the Florida Legislature raided the concealed weapons and firearms licensing trust fund. This not only effects resident CCW license holders, but non-resident Florida license holders as well!
They took $6 million from the Division of Licensing Concealed Weapons and Firearm Trust Fund that is intended, by law, to be used solely for administering the concealed weapons and firearms licensing program. (Read background information below)
Please Call, Fax, or Email Governor Charlie Crist IMMEDIATELY, and ask him to veto the $6 Million trust fund sweep from the Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Division of Licensing authorized under Section 59 of the Conference Report of SB-2600. Read more

Should Employees Be Able To Keep Gun In Car At Work
March 21, 2008
We have heard this discussion often of late and in Florida once again they are debating a bill that would allow an employee to keep a gun in their car at work provided it is kept locked in the trunk or the glove compartment of their automobile.
News4JAX has a brief story about the proposed bill, SB1130, and quite interestingly they are running a poll to see what readers think of this bill. Here’s what the poll asks. Read more
